Saint Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church

The Feast of Saint Joseph, the patron of the universal church, takes on a special meaning this year as we look foward to the inauguration of Pope Francis I. Already he has captured our hearts and raised our spirits. For those who might not be acquainted with the strictures of canon law, this ceremony is one in which the Holy Father is officially presented to the whole church. However, he is the Po...pe from the time he said to his brother cardinals: Accipite.
I accept. What do we know about this man? He is a simple man in the best meaning of that word. He kisses his guests and invites them to lunch. Those who love protocol, look out. He enjoys life. You mean that a person who hands over his life to the Lord and sacrifices everything can be happy. No, no he is JOY-FILLED. But make no mistake about it. He will be no push over. As he challenges himself to be poor of spirit he will challenge us. As he has made the poor a priority of his ministry he will expect the same of us. He will remind us that there is sin in the world, in him, and in us. But as he reminded us Sunday Jesus never tires of forgiving His children. God is so good to us in bestowing on the church such a servant. He is truly a Joseph who loves, guides, and strengthens us as the Saint did in the Holy Family. Saint Joseph, pray for Francis, pray for us.
